"Decades of research on the science of behavior has made clear that when someone (including a child) engages in a particular behavior, it is because of what they can gain or avoid. No matter how problematic the behavior, there is something that compels it—a “payoff.” So, there are no “bad,” “difficult,” or “manipulative” children. There are only children who find it difficult to get what they need in other, more “positive” ways."

Dearest H1 Parents,
Father Flanagan’s words, "There's no such thing as a bad boy," still rings in my mind. Of course, I've adapative it to, "There's no such thing as a bad child." This is my basic philosophy in regards to classroom management.
Each morning, we start the day with our Choice Cheer which is above. I've shared with the students that I am not in charge of their choices. My job is to recognize their choices.
When choices are good: Students are rewarded with specific praise, positive notes, better report card grades and hugs.
When choices are bad: Students are given reminders of desired behavior, redirections, and 1-1 private conferences to identify the cause. Most importantly, students are reminded that we all make mistakes, and these mistakes are our learning opportunities.
To evaluate their behavior and academic success, the State of Hawaii implements the G.L.O.s (General Learning Outcomes and our school uses the TRIBEs Agreements. There is a link on this site for each of these where you will find more information.
What To Expect Each Day
Our classroom system is very simple. As students leave the classroom, they choose a good note for their positive choices at school. So, every day each student can earn a good note.
When a student makes a mistake they will receive redirections/reminders from me. If the mistake occurs 3 times they receive a 'strike.' Then, if a student earns three strikes, he/she does not earn a good note, and I will write a message in their S.P.I.N Journal.
If there are any major behavioral issues, a parent/teacher/student conference will be scheduled and an individual action plan will be developed to support the student's improvement in the needed area.
As always, if you have any questions/suggestions/concerns, please contact me. I believe that together we make an awesome team.
