Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I wait before and after school?
In the mornings, all parents and students are to wait at one of two locations. The closest one for our classroom is behind the cafeteria, at the end of F Building. There are two school personnel assigned there to ensure your child's safety.
At dismissal, please wait in our cafeteria until 2:00 and then proceed to the end of H Building. When the bell rings, please come to the front of the classroom.
If you need to pick up your child during school hours, please send me a note/text so I can prepare your child in time. Or, in emergency situations, go to the office and they will call me. I will send your child to the office with an escort.
How can I celebrate my child's birthday at school?
We LOVE celebrating your child's birthday! Check our calendar to make sure I have your child's name included. If your child's birthday is in July, we celebrate it in August. If it's in June, we will celebrate their birthday in May. If their birthday is on a non week day, I let the child choose to celebrate either the day before or after.
In class, your child will receive a card, free trip to the treasure chest, birthday pencil, birthday wristband, $50 Dunham Dollars, singing and dancing!
Your school is proposing a healthier way to celebrate birthdays. If you would like to send in something other than traditional cupcakes, we suggest the following:
*Donate A Book - Have your child write an inscription in the cover.
*Party favors for each student (bouncy balls, matchbox cars, erasers, tops, magnifying glasses, notepads, balloons, whistles, bubbles, etc.). You can get these at a party supply store, dollar store, dollar shelves at stores like Target and catalogs like Oriental Trading Company.
*Send in supplies and directions for a craft for the kids to do instead of eating a snack. It is a bonus if the parent comes in to help with the craft!
Why is Daniel K. Inouye School a NUT free school?
Allergy to nuts appears to be on the rise in children. According to a FARE-funded study, the number of children in the U.S. with nut allergies more than tripled between 1997 and 2008. Studies in the United Kingdom and Canada also showed a high prevalence of peanut allergy in schoolchildren. (https://www.foodallergy.org/allergens/peanut-allergy)
We have several students this year in first grade with EXTREME nut allergies. One whiff, and they have trouble breathing. So please do not send in recess snacks of these types. Lunch is fine as we can monitor exposure.
How can I be a chaperone on a field trip?
First, you must take the chaperone class. Check with the PCNC office (located in main office building) for the dates of this training. Next, check the box of the bottom of the permission form. If there are more requests than the amount of chaperones allowed, I pull a name from a "hat" and email the names. I do my best to give all interested parents the opportunity to support their child's activities.
If you have any questions or suggestions to improve this process, please let me know.
How can I support Daniel K. Inouye Elementary School?
One way is to support your PTO. You are an automatic member of PTO through your child's enrollment at DKIES as the PTO doesn't require a membership fee. You can, however, make a monetary donation. Your PTO accepts checks and cash. You can simply place your donation in an envelope, put it in your child's paper folder, and I will delivery it to your PTO.
