"I need not repeat the fact that nobody without a visual memory for words ever succeeds in spelling conventionally, However highly educated he or she may be. ― GEORGE BERNARD SHAW
Dear H-1 Families,
Each week, your child will receive 8 spelling words that have some kind of a pattern they will need to master. Your child will copy the words and the pattern is written in a different color. There will also be 3 high frequency words to practice each week. It is expected that students practice their spelling words using the "75 ways to Practice Spelling". The list is below for you to use. This work is not turned in as most forms of practicing are not pencil and paper. DO NOT HAVE YOUR CHILD WRITE THE WORDS OVER AND OVER. Instead, a sticker will be added to their S.P.I.N. Journal Homework page on Thursdays which needs to be initial by the parent indicating they are practiced their words at least three times during the week. Remember, practice makes permanent!
On Fridays, there will be a spelling test. There will be 2 to 3 extra words added at that time. Each word will have the same pattern learned but a different beginning (onset). The main purpose of the spelling words is for your child to master these single syllable patterns that they can apply to create and/or read unknown multisyllabic words. This is an analogy process for teaching spelling instead of the traditional rote-memory programs we grew up with.
Finally, in the back of their S.P.I.N. notebook you will find a graph that has their spelling grades earned for each weekly test. Your child fills in the graph so they can take ownership of their learning. If you have any question, please contact me via email or text.
FYI -- At times, due to scheduling/shorter weeks or other unexpected events, there may be no spelling words. Your child will write this information in their S.P.I.N. Journal.
Below is a list of 75 Ways to Practice Spelling Words. It can be printed by downloading to your device. You and your child will use this list at least 3 times each week to master the weekly pattern and high frequency words.
Respectfully,
Ms. Dunham
